Special Programs

Fort Delaware State Park offers an exciting array of programs certain to please the entire family. From firing the giant cannon, to experiencing the enticing aroma of meals being prepared in the officer's kitchen, we promise a "hands-on history" that is interesting, provocative and always fun. The naturalists in the familly will be interested in visting our heronry overlook. Pea Patch Island is home to the largest heronry on the east coast north of Florida. More than 9,000 pairs of these elegant birds arrive in the spring to lay eggs and launch yet another generation. It is truley a remarkable experience.

Standard Programs:
Purchase of a ferry ticket allows visitors access to the restored areas at Fort Delaware, the Prison Camp Trail, the heronry overlook and all regular public programs. This ticket also permits visitors to continue their trip to Fort Mott State Park. Regular programs include: an orientation, guided tours, cooking and crafts demonstrations and select living history programs.

Limited Edition Programs:
Limited Edition Programs require the purchase of an additional ticket. Tickets are sold at the Gift Shop in Delaware City and at the Suttler Shop on the island. A variety of these programs are offered daily. Please visit www.destateparks.com or call the park office at 302-834-7941 for prices and schedules.

Annual Special Events:
Special reenactments occur twice a year at the Fort and draw hundreds of Civil War reenactors. These events are: The Mid Atlantic School of the Musician, and Garrison Weekend. Special event days differ substantially from our standard program days. Greater numbers of living historians allow for a wider range of program offerings.
